Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of North Carolina Wilmington invites applications for the Linda Sayed Distinguished Professor of Chemistry. This will be a full-time tenured Associate/Full Professor in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, with an emphasis in the area of biopharmaceuticals. This is a nine-month, tenured position beginning in Fall 2022.

The focus area includes, but is not limited to, nucleic acid technologies, protein and peptide therapeutics, and other emerging technologies in the area of biopharmaceuticals. The successful candidate is expected to have a significant influence on the development of a new Ph.D. program in Pharmaceutical Chemistry.

To be considered at the level of tenured Professor or Associate Professor, candidates are expected to have an established record of scholarship and research. The successful candidate is expected to maintain excellence in research with a vigorous, externally funded program, and to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, the latter particularly in pharmaceutical chemistry. Tenure will be awarded with the appointment as Associate/Full Professor. The Distinguished Associate Professor or Distinguished Professor designation is renewable every five years with successful departmental review.

-PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry or a related field is required.

-Significant academic and/or industrial experience is required.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

Chemistry & Biochemistry at UNCW offers exciting, student-oriented programs that award Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BS, ACS Certified) and Master of Science (MS) degrees. A PhD program in Pharmaceutical Chemistry is currently undergoing review at the UNC system. A significant portion of the training takes place in our laboratories, both those associated with courses, and those involving research in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Organic and Inorganic Synthesis, Computational and Physical Chemistry, Marine and Atmospheric Science, and Chemical Education, all of which incorporate our state of the are instrumentation (http://www.uncw.edu/chem/). In addition to rigorous courses in all aspects of chemistry, most of our undergraduate students and all of our local graduate students carry out research under the direct supervision of our outstanding faculty.

College/School Information

The College of Arts and Sciences is UNCW’s largest academic unit and awards approximately two-thirds of the university’s academic credits. Ours is a comprehensive arts and sciences college comprising the arts, the humanities, the mathematical and natural sciences, and the social and behavioral sciences.

In addition to its undergraduate major and minor programs, the College is chiefly responsible for the curriculum that comprises the UNCW’s University Studies Program, through which all UNCW undergraduates gain a foundation in the liberal arts and develop the transferable skills essential for life in the twenty-first century. The College strives in its undergraduate programs and in its University Study offerings to nurture creative thinking, intellectual curiosity, diversity and inclusion, and academic integrity in students while providing them with a solid foundation of knowledge in their chosen fields. Graduate degrees awarded in the College of Arts and Sciences include the Master of Arts, the Master of Fine Arts, the Master of Public Administration, the Master of Science and the Doctor of Philosophy (Marine Biology and Psychology). In addition, the nationally awarded Graduate Liberal Studies program offers a personalized curriculum of interdisciplinary study leading to the Master of Arts. Post-baccalaureate certificates in Applied Statistics, Environmental Studies, Forensic Science, Conflict Management and Resolution, Gender Studies and Hispanic Studies are available. Graduate programs in the College are designed to develop intellectual competence and to prepare the student for careers in business, industry, government, teaching or for further study at the doctoral level.
