Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Assistant Director/Training Director provides leadership to the Counseling Center clinical training program and assists in the design of other training opportunities and works collaboratively with Center administrators to develop/maintain appropriate clinical training experiences. This position is a critical member of the Counseling Center Leadership Team.

Responsibilities includes, but are not limited to:
  • Ensures the availability of meaningful training experiences for post-doctoral fellows and other training participants
  • Develops, maintains, coordinates and conducts training seminars
  • Ensures adherence to Licensure Board requirements
  • Assists trainees to develop a professional identity
  • Provides clinical and program supervision
  • Assists with managing staff interactions with the Training program
  • Engages in appropriate professional practice as outlined by legal and ethical standards
  • Participates in the development and delivery of proactive, psycho-education programming initiatives as needed
  • Participates in the after-hour /on-call rotation providing general and clinical supervision services, as needed
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with campus colleagues in order to provide services which meet the assessed needs of campus
  • Provides consultation and training services for the campus community
  • Completes others duties as requested or assigned
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

An earned doctorate in counseling or clinical psychology from an academic program accredited by the American Psychological Association is required. Successful completion of a supervised doctoral internship is required. Minimum of three years of post graduation experience is required. Acceptable experiences include post doctoral fellowships in a college counseling or similar setting, direct clinical experience, clinical supervision, administrative or teaching responsibilities.

Experience in providing crisis intervention services and working within a university counseling center with an active training program is also required; Familiarity with clinical training and providing clinical supervision is required. Experience in developing and providing psycho-educational programming for a college-aged population is required. Current licensure / certification or eligibility for licensure as a psychologist in the State of North Carolina is required. Once licensed, NC licensure must be maintained to remain eligible for employment.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • 5-years licensed as a psychologist in any state with ability to transfer licensure to North Carolina
  • Demonstration of progressive increases in responsibility at a Counseling Center
  • Participation and involvement in professional associations or organizations relevant to training
  • Involvement in the planning and implementation of psychology clinical training programs
  • Sound administrative, organizational, managerial, program development and data-analytical/evaluation skills
  • A strong interest in working with underserved/under-represented student populations
  • Education, training and experience providing didactic training on topics related to clinical practice and program evaluation
Required Certifications or Licensures
  • 5-years licensed as a psychologist in any state with ability to transfer licensure to North Carolina
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The UNCW Counseling Center provides general counseling for students (individual, relationship, and group); development and delivery of outreach programming; consultation services (including targeted campus training efforts) for campus constituencies; crisis intervention services, referral services, and training services (including didactic training and clinical supervision) for early career psychologists and participants in the Center’s pre-licensure training program.
