The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Russian to begin August 10, 2020. Virginia Tech has one of the largest undergraduate Russian programs in the country and has been the recipient of funding for Project GO (Global Officer), a Department of Defense initiative, since 2012. As a Research I institution, Virginia Tech strongly values high scholarly productivity as well as excellence in teaching. The standard teaching load is two/two courses per academic year. Responsibilities include teaching Russian at all levels, research and scholarship, extra-curricular programming, promoting study abroad, and university service. We are seeking a creative and dynamic teacher-scholar who is able to contribute to the expansion of our program. Candidates from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Requirements include: 1) PhD by time of appointment in Russian language, literature, culture, language pedagogy, second language acquisition, or other related field; 2) native or near-native fluency in Russian and English; 3) evidence of a strong research agenda; 4) evidence of successful teaching experience in Russian as a foreign language; 5) ability to teach undergraduate courses in language from the elementary to the advanced level as well as literature and culture; and 6) commitment to proficiency-based and communicative approaches to teaching language. Criminal conviction check and occasional travel to attend professional conferences and meetings are also required.

Preferred qualifications include experience in: curriculum design; second language proficiency testing and assessment (such as ACTFL training/certification).
