Mission or Goal of Unit

The mission of the Department of Neurosurgery is the advancement and provision of surgical care and treatment for patients with Neurological anomalies. Additional focus is placed in the area of science and teaching through research and the training of undergraduate and graduate students in our discipline. The Department fosters a level of research and professional activity essential to the GME program (Neurosurgical residency) and to the professional growth of the faculty. The Department is committed to enhance diversity among its faculty, staff, and students. Finally, Department faculty have a responsibility to provide service to their profession and to the university community.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

This position will provide clinical expertise and care toward surgical treatment of all Neurosurgical anomalies, with a key focus on the surgical treatment of Neurovascular/neuroendovascular disease. The incumbent will support the training and teaching of Neurosurgery residents as well as other students and observers. The incumbent will strive for excellence and productivity in research discoveries in their clinical area of focus.

Position Responsibilities

1. Teaching – Faculty member will participate in the teaching of residents, medical students and other students & observers. Provide CME lectures for professionals.

2. Research – Faculty member shall establish a reputation of excellence in clinical and/or translational research, with the expectation of publication in refereed journals and potential external funding. The development of interdisciplinary collaborations to enhance the research and clinical programs at VCU is expected. Mentoring of residents and students in their research.

3. Service – Faculty member will serve on departmental, Health System and/or University committees as needed. Service in a professional capacity in their field in such areas of reviewer, external committee member, conference organizer, etc. are encouraged.

4. Clinical – This is the area of primary focus as a clinical faculty MD. Faculty member will demonstrate excellence in provision of surgical care and treatment for Neurological anomalies of the spine and central nervous system, with the key focus of this position falling in the area of neurovascular disease. Faculty member will demonstrate responsibility toward growth of individual clinical practice and referral base. Faculty will participate in multi-disciplinary clinical endeavors.

Required Qualifications

• Must be Board Certified/Board Eligible in Neurosurgery.
• Must hold ACGME accredited (or equivalent) fellowship training in neuroendovascular/neurointerventional procedures.
• Must be able to demonstrate minimum case volumes as defined for clinical privileging at VCUHS .
• Must hold a valid license to practice medicine in the state of Virginia.
• Must demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member of VCU .
• For rank of Assistant Professor: The faculty member will be required to have an established research agenda and a clear potential for external funding, and potential for scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the department.
• For rank of Associate Professor: The faculty member will be required to have a well developed scholarly/research portfolio with evidence of multi-disciplinary applications and external funding appropriate to complement and expand existing expertise in the department
