The Department of East Asian Studies in the School of International Languages, Literatures and Cultures (SILLC) at the University of Arizona is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor with an area of pre-modern Japanese literature. We are looking for a dynamic, interdisciplinary scholar and excellent teacher that will engage students through course offerings focusing on major works of pre-modern Japanese literature and thematic courses that complement courses on Japanese linguistics, history, anthropology, and religious studies. The successful candidate will engage advanced undergraduate learners of Japanese and graduate students by teaching classical Japanese. The successful candidate’s research profile should be interdisciplinary and should define an area of study on pre-modern Japanese literary traditions, history, and linguistics.

The top candidate will have the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds. Candidates should be highly collaborative, exploratory, and hardworking with strong potential for research and publication, demonstrated excellence in teaching, and a commitment to mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. Near-native proficiency in English and Japanese is required. A PhD in Japanese Studies, East Asian Studies or a related field must be in hand by the time of the appointment. This benefits-eligible position and the appointment starts in August 2020.
