Job Description Summary

During the Academic Year (September to Early June) & Summer Six-Week Components (Mid June to Early August), Upward Bound Instructors are responsible for planning and implementing dynamic, engaging, empowering Academic Year & Summer Component (6-weeks) courses. The coursework and classroom environment should encourage and reward reflection, revision, and improvement in the academic courses being taught. Courses must incorporate culturally responsive pedagogy, project-based learning, and student-centered learning, community action projects and multicultural perspectives. Each course should focus on one overachieving project. Students may work in groups or individually on the class project and the projects will be presented at the end of the program.

Hours vary based on course schedule and component. Courses offered or assigned may be 60 to 90 minutes at length and meet between 8:30am and 4:30pm, Monday through Friday, and some Saturday sessions between 8:00am and 3:00pm.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Applicant must have a strong academic focus in one or more of the following subject areas: English I-IV; Math- Geometry, Algebra II/Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus/Calculus; Science-Biology, Chemistry, Physics; Foreign Language-Spanish, French, Japanese, Italian; Technology or Careers.
  2. Bachelor’s degree required in subject areas: English, Mathematics, Science, Foreign Language, Computer Technology or Career Counseling (High School and/or College level).
  3. Previous experience designing academic curriculum (secondary curriculum preferred) or corporate professional development components.
  4. One year full-time or equivalent part-time experience in providing direct services in a secondary educational or social service environment working with at-risk students (teaching or tutoring), or one year full-time or equivalent part-time experience in providing corporate training.
  5. Experience and knowledge regarding computer programs such as word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, and instructional technology.

  • Extent of demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff and community members in person, on the telephone and in writing.
  • Evidence of ability to speak in public, exceptional written and communication skills.
Job Requirements

  1. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, depending on program needs. During the academic year, instructor hours are every other Saturday, 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., with the possibility of some evenings during the week. Summer schedule (mid-June thru August) is Monday thru Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with some evenings and Saturdays. Work schedule is subject to change based on department needs.
  2. If recommended for the position, the applicant must be fingerprinted for a background investigation (at college expense), and be cleared for working with children.
  3. Must be able to commit to working a set schedule for approximately 9 weeks per semester, and for 6 weeks during the summer component.
  4. Certification or provisional certification to teach in subject area or currently teaching/advising at the secondary/college level, or corporate training experience.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written standard English.
  6. As required by the 1986 Immigration Act, be prepared to present acceptable documentation showing your identity and that you are a U.S. citizen or an alien who is authorized to work.
  7. A limited background investigation will be conducted prior to offer of employment. A signed authorization for release of personal information will be required if selected for an interview.
