Minimum qualifications include an earned doctorate from an accredited university in Parks, Recreation or Tourism Management ( PRTM ), Leisure Studies or a closely related field with at least one degree in PRTM and/or Leisure Studies required. ABD candidates will be considered, pending successful completion of degree requirements by position start date.

Special consideration will be given to candidates who have experience working with clients, participants, or students from diverse backgrounds, and have a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion to improve access to recreation and to higher education for under-represented groups.

In addition, desirable candidates could provide evidence of experience and/or expertise in, but not limited to, the following areas:
• Teaching in PRTM with a specialization in either tourism or recreation administration
• Professional field experience in PRTM Field (tourism, recreation administration)
• Scholarly productivity and professional service

Description of the Department or Unit

The Department of RMPE is comprised of Recreation Management; Health, Physical Education, & Coaching; and Physical Education Activity programs. The Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation Management (RM) program has been continuously accredited by the Council on Accreditation for Parks, Recreation, Tourism and Related Professions ( COAPRT ) since 1996, and includes concentrations in Commercial Recreation and Tourism Management, Recreation and Park Management, and Outdoor Experiential Education. The RMPE Department is located within the Beaver College of Health Sciences ( BCHS ). BCHS is celebrating its 10th year as a college, and it is the second largest college at Appalachian State University with over 3,700 students served by 150 faculty and staff. Committed to interprofessional innovation and collaboration in teaching, scholarship, service and clinical outreach, the BCHS is transforming the health and quality of life for the communities we serve. In 2018, the College expanded to include the Holmes Convocation Center and Leon Levine Hall of Health Sciences, a new, state-of-the-art 203,000 square foot facility that is the cornerstone of the Wellness District. In addition, the college is home for the Blue Cross NC Institute for Health and Human Services and has a collaborative partnership with the Wake Forest School of Medicine’s Physician Assistant Program.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities include teaching and mentoring students, participating in university and professional service, conducting quality research, and collaborating with university and community stakeholders to support interprofessional student engagement activities.
