The Department of African American Studies at Loyola Marymount
University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or
Associate Professor position with an emphasis in the social
sciences, to begin August 2020. The successful candidate should
have expertise in 20th and 21st century African American political
and social issues. The department is particularly interested in
candidates with innovative research designs that interrogate the
relationship between race and other relevant social
indicators.
LMU values the teacher-scholar model; therefore, successful
candidates will demonstrate a strong research agenda and an ability
to incorporate their research within a variety of upper and
lower-division courses in African American Studies, such as
Introduction to African American Studies and African American
Studies Research Methods. The department greatly values community
engagement, diversity, social justice, and inclusive pedagogy in
fostering academic excellence.
The typical teaching load for tenure-track faculty spread across two years is 2-2-2-3, with an expectation to advise students of diverse populations on their academic and professional aspirations, and to engage in university, college, and departmental service as needed. Applicants should demonstrate the ability to thrive in an interdisciplinary unit.
Qualifications:
• Ph.D. in African American Studies with a specialization in social
scientific research including quantitative techniques. The
department will consider applicants with backgrounds in other
appropriate social science fields whose work centers the black
experience, including but not limited to Sociology, Political
Science, Public Policy, Anthropology, and Public Health. A Ph.D. is
required by the time of appointment.
• Success in teaching the African American experience
• Record of scholarly achievement in the discipline of African
American Studies
• Ability to incorporate LMU’s mission in teaching, scholarship,
and service to the university
Applicants should submit a complete dossier via the LMU Human Resources online application portal (http://jobs.lmu.edu), including: 1) a cover letter (outlining area of expertise, teaching, and research interests); 2) a curriculum vitae; 3) a statement of teaching philosophy that demonstrates the candidate’s approach to teaching African American Studies; 4) a sample syllabus of Introduction to African American Studies or African American Research Methods; 5) a writing sample of no more than 30 pages in length; and 6) A copy (can be unofficial) of graduate school transcripts. The three letters of recommendation should be scanned and signed by the recommenders and emailed by the recommender directly to Stefan Bradley: AFAMFacultySearch@lmu.edu. Please direct questions to Stefan Bradley at the above address. Only electronic applications will be considered. Consideration for complete applications will commence on November 1, 2019.
