Associate or Full Professor of Asian American Studies Program, American Studies

The American Studies Program at Williams College seeks to make a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor in Asian American Studies, to start July 1, 2020. The program seeks to complement and expand the existing expertise of our faculty who teach Asian American topics, and is especially interested in applications from those scholars whose research interests and teaching focus on social science or related topics and whose portfolios encompass interdisciplinary approaches.

The candidate should be a committed and imaginative scholar with an established record of excellence in scholarship and teaching and experience in program-building. We have a strong preference for those who demonstrate a commitment to the interdisciplinary nature and methodologies of American Studies in their research and teaching; the hire will be expected to teach both the introductory course and the junior-level theories and methods course, in addition to courses in their specialties. The teaching load is two courses per semester and a winter-study course every other January.

American Studies at Williams is a small but vibrant program with a diverse faculty and dynamic and engaged majors, whose numbers are growing. Created in 1940, it is one of the oldest American Studies programs in the country and has been at the forefront at Williams in teaching courses that foreground issues of race and racism, class, gender/sexuality, globalization, diaspora, among others. The hire will join three other Asian Americanists at the college and will have a hand in hiring a junior tenure-track Asian Americanist the following year. We are especially interested in candidates from historically under-represented groups, candidates whose scholarship and teaching enrich the diversity and intellectual vibrancy of our academic communities, and candidates who have experience working effectively with diverse student populations.

Please send the following application materials to the chair of the search committee, Prof. Dorothy Wang via Interfolio ( http://apply.interfolio.com/66535): a letter of application that includes a summary of current and future scholarship, teaching interests and experience, and experience working effectively with students who are widely diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, and religion; a curriculum vitae; and names of three references. All applications received by Oct. 1, 2019 will receive full consideration.  Semi-finalists will be asked to submit three letters of recommendation and other materials by Oct. 18 and preliminary video interviews will be scheduled during the week of Oct. 21.  Finalists will be invited to Williamstown for a campus interview in mid-November.

All offers of employment are contingent on completion of a background check. Further information is available at: http://dean-faculty.williams.edu/prospective-faculty/background-check-policy/ .
