Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

The Child Development Center is seeking to hire a full-time Assistant Teacher.

The Child Development Center ( CDC ) at Virginia Commonwealth University offers full-day care and developmentally-appropriate education for the families of VCU faculty, staff and students. The VCU CDC is one of just 12 centers in Richmond to hold a National Association for the Education of Young Children accreditation, The Child Development Center is committed to a safe, nurturing environment for its children, and prides itself on maintaining a close relationship with its families and communities.

Duties of the Assistant Teacher include:
-Supervise and provide guidance to young children, ensuring health and safety in a developmentally-appropriate environment.
-Assist Lead Teacher in planning and implementing activities and assessment.
-Assist Lead Teacher in carrying out developmental curriculum and assessment
-Collaborate with teammates to ensure a high quality program.
-Attend 16 hours of required training annually as required by the VCU Child Development Center, the VA Department of Social Services, and the national Association for the Education of Young Children ( NAEYC ).

*Due to the nature of this position, hiring is dependent on successfully passing a series of background checks

Minimum Hiring Standards

- Excellent verbal/written communication and customer service skills required
- A professional attitude and practicing confidentiality
- Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize work
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks by stated deadlines
- Excellent computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office software
-Demonstrated ability to work independently
-Pleasant, positive and helpful service attitude
- Flexibility and and ability to shift priorities as needed
- Teaching or administrative experience in an NAEYC -accredited program.
- Experience with scheduling.
- Background check and negative TB test required

Preferred Hiring Standards

-Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education preferred (or bachelor’s degree in related field such as human services, child and family studies, psychology, etc., with 15 hours of ECE coursework), or equivalent experience.
- First Aid / CPR certification preferred
