Mission or Goal of Unit

The Department of African American Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University is one of the nation’s leading baccalaureate programs in the areas of funded scholarship, learning innovation and undergraduate student enrollment. The department emphasizes multidisciplinary perspectives in defining, examining, interpreting and validating the experiences of African descended persons.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

The Department of African American Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University invites applications for a full-time, tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level to begin August 2020. We are seeking an individual who will (i) pursue an innovative research agenda; (ii) teach courses in the department’s undergraduate curriculum; (iii) participate in intellectual life of the department, including its commitment to community engagement efforts and programming. This will be a 9-month position.

Position Responsibilities

The faculty member will provide: teaching courses in the Department of African American Studies, contributing to curriculum development, a demonstrated record of sustained research with a clear potential of external funding and potential scholarship or creative expression to expand existing expertise in the department.

Required Qualifications

Required qualifications include: a Ph.D. in African American Studies or a cognate discipline (Black Studies, Afro-American Studies, Africology and African American Studies, African and African American Studies, etc.); a demonstrated record of sustained research; teaching experience at the university level; a demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment, or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU; and a commitment to pursuing the methodological traditions, pedagogical aims, and historical mission of African American Studies.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include a demonstrated record of involvement in community engagement activities; experience with innovative methods of teaching, including online instruction, the use of digital technologies, community-based learning, and community organizing pedagogies; experience in grant writing for private and public agencies.
