Mission or Goal of Unit

The primary mission of the School of Dentistry is to educate practitioners of Dentistry capable of meeting the general oral health needs of the communities they serve, Integral parts of the mission are research and other scholarly activity, patient care, and service and leadership in dental education and organized dentistry, and collaboration and participation with other units with VCU and VCU Health Systems.
The mission of the Pediatric Dentistry department is to educate pre-doctoral and post-graduate students in the highest quality clinical and research environment, Pediatric Dentistry endeavors to advance the oral health of children by educating world -class dentists and fostering learders in clinical care and service both locally and globally.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

To provide teaching, research, scholarly activities, and patient care of for VCU School of Dentistry.

Position Responsibilities

Teaching: Faculty members are expected to teach in a integrated curriculum system that includes baccalaureate, graduate and profession education. Teaching across traditional departmental lines and in multidisciplinary teams is required. Faculty members are expected to foster transformative learning that is informed by interdisciplinary and transnational research, scholarship, and creative expression.
This includes teaching at affiliated facilities and supervision of dental and dental hygiene students and dental residents.

Research: Participation in departmental, School of Dentistry, or VCU Health System research projects is expected. If tenure eligibility is desired, for appointment at the rank of assistant profession, the candidate will be required to have an established research agenda and a clear potential for external funding, and potential for scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the department. For appointment at the rank associate professor, the candidate will be required to have a well -developed scholarly research portfolio with evidence of multi-disciplinary applications.

Clinical: Participates in the intramural faculty practice is expected, including hospital-based practice with VCU Health and Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU .

Required Qualifications

Candidates must have a D.D.S. / D.M.D
degree or foreign equivalent, a certificate in pediatric dentistry from an ADA accredited program, be eligible or certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, and be eligible for licensure in Virginia. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU .

Preferred Qualifications

Prefer a history of clinical care, teaching and scholarly activity with good communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrate the ability to adapt to change and embrace modern technology.
Candidates must demonstrate the ability to contribute to and participate in a humanistic environment of learning. Candidates must demonstrate the ability, or acquire and develop such ability, to incorporate adult leaning theory, evidence-based oral health care, innovation in student learning and critical thinking.
