The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Southeast Asian Studies at the rank of assistant professor beginning in fall 2020.

 

The Department seeks candidates whose research focuses on moving image studies, media studies, sound studies, digital culture, visual culture, or related fields of Southeast Asia, defined as the region including Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, the Philippines, Brunei, East Timor, and Indonesia. Secondary topics of specialization may include, but are not limited to, environment and ecocriticism, migration and diaspora, gender and sexuality, ethnicity and indigeneity, religious studies, performance studies, and literary studies.

Required qualifications: PhD (or foreign equivalent) in a relevant field is required. Advanced ABDs may be considered for appointment at the rank of instructor with the stipulation that the PhD is conferred in the first year of the appointment.

 

Preferred qualifications: Ability to teach with a transnational regional approach is preferred. Connections with existing Department strengths in the regions of East Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East would be welcomed. We seek candidates who have the ability to teach multiple mediums and who employ cross-disciplinary approaches and embed their scholarship and teaching of cultural texts within broader social, historical, and political processes. Native or near-native fluency in at least one Southeast Asian language in addition to English will be expected in most cases.
