The Department of Medicinal Chemistry is seeking a polymer chemist or organic scientist to support discovery activities for new polymer materials. The successful candidate will develop cell membrane active polymers for membrane protein research. The current project focuses on development of a polymer library by chemical modification of styrene maleic anhydride co-polymer for high-resolution structure determination of membrane proteins using the single particle cryo-electron microscopy. We have developed a series of proto-type membrane active polymers. We are the first in the world to determine the highest-resolution cryo-EM structures of a patch of native cell membrane lipid bilayer together with a membrane protein transporter using our developed membrane active polymer. Our work revealed the importance of the lipids as crucial part of the integrity of the structure and function of membrane proteins. We are pioneering a revolutionary technology development for membrane protein sciences and related drug discovery.

Required Qualifications

This position requires the successful candidate to be an adept, hands-on chemist with experience in materials and polymer, polymer materials modification and characterization, and formulation development.
-Ph.D. in Chemistry, chemical engineering, polymer science or a related discipline.
-Experience in developing novel materials, including polymers, formulations, polymeric systems, and related material development will be a plus.
-Fundamental understanding of material synthesis, characterization, structure-property relationships and utilization towards application development is also desirable.
-The ability to work in a team-orient, interdisciplinary environment that embraces changes, risk, and flexibility will be needed.
-This individual must be capable of handling multiple projects/tasks at the same time.
-A demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team with sense of urgency for timelines is needed.
-This individual will have the potential to lead technical aspects within project teams.
-The successful candidate must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
-A passion and enthusiasm for innovation will be an asset.
-Proven problem solving skills and good interpersonal relationship and people skills will be needed.

Many membrane proteins are important drug targets. We are pioneering a new technology development for membrane protein structure biology and related drug discovery and work on several biomedically important membrane proteins. Furthermore, we also collaborate with several excellent scientists, some of them are members of National Academy of Sciences or Nobel Prize Laureates. Working in a multidisciplinary environment, the successful candidate will have the advantage of learning from other experts to lead and develop his/her own unique research areas.
