The Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies at California State University, Fullerton invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in History (or related discipline) with a focus on Chicana/o and Latina/o populations with appointment to begin Fall 2020. The goal of the Chicana and Chicano Studies Department is to expand critical thinking, communication, and civic-mindedness through an engaging and interdisciplinary curriculum focusing on the arts, humanities, and social sciences. We prepare our scholars for future academic and employment endeavors and to be successful leaders in their communities.

Position
The ideal candidate will be a teacher/scholar who is trained in Chicana/o Studies and History and will be committed to promoting student academic success through culturally relevant and inclusive pedagogies and mentoring. The primary responsibilities of this person will include teaching three courses per semester of introductory and core courses in History, and the development of courses in their area(s) of specialization. Specific courses that this person will likely teach include Introduction to Ethnic Studies, Communication Skills, Introduction to Chicana/o Studies, Survey of American History with Emphasis on Ethnic Minorities, Chicana/o Identities, History of the Chicano, and Mexican Life and Culture. A record of scholarly/creative activity or potential, and evidence of effective teaching are required. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to and participate in the life and development of the department, including advising students, serving on committees, and participating in the broader university and disciplinary communities.

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Chicana/o Studies, Ethnic Studies, American Studies, History or a related interdisciplinary field with a focus on Chicana/o and Latina/o populations
  • ABD candidates must show evidence that the degree will be completed by the appointment date
  • Specialization in Oral and/or Public History (e.g., methods, museum studies, digital humanities, archival collections development, etc.)
  • Evidence of effective teaching experience at the college or university level
  • A record of scholarly/creative accomplishments or potential
  • Experience in working collaboratively with colleagues and community
  • Demonstrated contributions to diversity through scholarship/creative activity, teaching, and service
  • Demonstrated commitment to and excellence in undergraduate teaching of a very diverse student population


  • Preferred Qualifications
    • Demonstrated experience and interest in topics related to interdisciplinary and/or comparative approaches, preferably with Chicana/o expertise and one of the following: Central Americans, or Caribbean populations, African Diaspora, Indigenous Studies, etc.
    • Specialization in Queer Studies, Sexuality, Transgender and/or Gender Studies
    • Specialization in Critical Race Studies

    Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications, and is subject to budgetary authorization and any California State University System faculty contract increases. Summer research grants, moving expenses, start‐up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.
