Syracuse University, a research-intensive (R1) institution, is pleased to announce a position for a well-qualified Discipline Based Education Research PostDoc in Biology and/or Chemistry. This position will support the planning, development, and implementation of the Syracuse University Inclusive Excellence CHANcE Project funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute ( HHMI ).

Qualifications

Qualified candidates will be those with significant training and content knowledge in Biology and/or Chemistry and who hold a Ph.D. in Science/ STEM Education or a related field focused on undergraduate teaching and learning; or those who hold a Ph.D. in Biology, Chemistry, or a related field with significant training and experience in education research as well as course design and implementation of active-learning at the undergraduate level.

Job Specific Qualifications

General background knowledge and expertise:
- expert in active learning and other high-impact teaching practices
- expert in discipline-based education research in biology and/or chemistry
- significant knowledge in biology or chemistry, of the challenges of learning and teaching in that discipline, and of the science of learning and teaching generally.
- understand how people learn the concepts, practices, and ways of thinking of science
- understand the nature and development of expertise in a discipline
- understand how to identify and measure appropriate learning objectives and instructional approaches that advance students toward those objectives
- contribute to the STEM education knowledge base in a way that can guide the translation of Discipline Based Education Research findings to classroom practice
- identify approaches to make science education broad and inclusive

Competencies:

• Ph.D. in Science/ STEM Education or related field with a focus on teaching and learning in biology and/or chemistry; or a Ph.D in biology, chemistry, or a related field with significant training and experience in Discipline-based Education Research and teaching (graduate degree or postdoctoral training, significant education research publications, significant independent implementation of active learning pedagogy, etc.)
• Excellent skills working both independently and as a team member
• Able to earn trust in relationships with others by consistently demonstrating integrity (honesty, consistency, and reliability) and professional competence
• Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with executive decision makers and influencers
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to work and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across multiple organizations
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage a variety of tasks simultaneously
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to remain courteous and professional at all times
• Demonstrated ability to review and prioritize work independently and effectively
• Demonstrated ability to be resourceful and creative when problem-solving
• Ability to maintain calm and positive attitude and to work productively despite heavy workload, competing priorities, complex problems, and tight deadlines
• Ability to handle sensitive and confidential situations/information with absolute discretion

Responsibilities

The Discipline Based Education Research PostDoc will contribute to high-quality teaching and professional development of Biology and Chemistry faculty toward implementation of High Impact Practices (HIPs) including active learning pedagogies and course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs). In addition, the Discipline Based Education Research PostDoc will work closely with various partners in the University and other stakeholders to research critical issues and develop evidence-based recommendations for potential inteventions. The portfolio of activities will include new and ongoing efforts to develop an inclusive environment in the Biology and Chemistry Departments for underrepresented minority and first-generation students. The Discipline Based Education Research PostDoc will hold appointments in the Biology and/or Chemistry Departments as well as the Department of Science Teaching and be mentored by senior faculty in Science Teaching and the Biology Education Research Group.
