The Office of Core Curriculum (OCC) and the School of Social
Sciences (SOSS), Singapore Management University, invites
applications for one Education Track (non-tenurable) Assistant
Professorship and one Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in the Humanities,
broadly conceived, to begin in July 2020. The jointly appointed
positions are open to all humanistic scholars, such as in the
fields of Asian studies, literature, and philosophy, who can
contribute to the multidisciplinary delivery of the University’s
We are interested in candidates who can teach (1) courses that
would fit under a “Cultures of the Modern World” heading, such as
“Multiculturalism and its Critics”, “Popular Cultures in Asia”,
“Folk Narratives in Indonesian Literature”, and/or (2)
multidisciplinary survey courses such as “Global and Local” and
“War and Peace”. (3) We are especially interested in candidates
that can offer courses that examine the history, culture,
economics, and/or politics of Singapore and its relationship with
the region and the world.
These positions require a doctorate in the relevant discipline
by the date of appointment. We seek candidates with an excellent
record of teaching and scholarly research.
Singapore Management University is a research university
committed to a multidisciplinary and integrated curriculum. Salary
and benefits, and, research support, are highly competitive. The
teaching load is six sections per year for the Education Track
position and eight for the Lecturer/Senior lecturer position.
Full evaluation of applications will start 23 September
2019. Only shortlisted candidates, who will be invited for
campus visits beginning in October 2019, will be notified. This
position will be open until filled.
Interested candidates should submit an application package in
electronic form (Word or PDF file) and include: a cover letter
indicating the position applied for, an up-to-date curriculum
vitae, evidence of teaching effectiveness (such as teaching
evaluations), a 1-2 page teaching statement, and a 1-2 page
research statement. Candidates for the Education Track position
should also submit a writing sample.
