Job Summary

The assistant athletic trainer is responsible for providing athletic training services to Lindenwood University intercollegiate athletic programs. This position collaborates with the athletic training program coordinator to provide supervision, instruction and evaluation of athletic training students.

Essential Job Functions and Performance Indicators

Job Responsibilities

  • Assists with the overall administration of the athletic training program
  • Administers injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation
  • Maintains accurate medical records and appropriate communication with the sports medicine team and physicians
  • Provides practice and game coverage
  • Conducts pre-participation evaluations
  • Coordinates medical insurance claims
  • Oversees student employees and athletic training students
  • Teaches courses as assigned

Service Orientation

  • Performs all associated duties as a clinical preceptor for students within the athletic training program
  • Attends all preceptor training events and instructional seminars, providing athletic training student supervision and clinical instruction
  • Coordinates schedules and provide students with necessary opportunities
  • Maintains student adherence to the athletic training program’s code of conduct
  • Evaluates athletic training students’ clinical performance
  • Upholds the standards and ethics of an athletic training clinical preceptor, and communicate with the clinical education coordinator on a regular basis
  • Assists with additional athletic training student clinical testing, such as the clinical exit exams performed by graduating seniors
  • Assists in the assignment of sports rotations for student employees
  • Promotes a positive image of the university and fulfill a community service goal by providing athletic services during athletic events, including pre-event preparation of participants, on-the-field injury assessment, providing first aid when appropriate, and arranging for transportation to a medical facility as necessary
  • Adheres to the referral protocol as established by the university
  • Promotes a better understanding of athletic training within the region by making presentations to students, faculty, and staff as well as community groups and organizations on topics such as injury prevention, conditioning, nutrition, and drug awareness
  • Assists the athletic training department by sitting on different committees (interview, student employee search, etc.)

Communication, Collaboration, and Teamwork

  • Maintains open communication with administration, faculty, physicians, coaches, parents, and athlete within limits of existing law
  • Supervises athletic training student employees
  • Provides guidance and support to student employees, maintains schedules, and assign sports coverage for each season
  • Provides bi-annual evaluation of student employee performance, providing feedback to better assist student employees in their continued education
  • Facilitates the communication process between patients and physicians by serving as a liaison between the physician and the patient
  • Provides detailed rehabilitative progress assessments to the physicians based upon frequent athlete contact,
  • Explains the technical or medical terminologies in understandable language for the patients

Planning, Organizing, and Accountability

  • Maintains accurate records of athletic injuries, physical modalities, rehabilitation programs, physician visits, and release of records
  • Minimizes institutional liability in the performance of athletic training services by maintaining proper and current licensure and practicing in accordance with the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Code of Ethics
  • Assists with administrative responsibilities including secondary insurance for student athletes, inventory of athletic training supplies, and coordination of pre-season physicals for athletes

Initiative, Problem-Solving, and Decision Making

  • Directs event coverage, staffing, and equipment purchase/maintenance for all athletic training facilities
  • Reviews athletic training coverage strengths and weaknesses, and provide input on how to best address weaknesses
  • Maintains professional competence and expand knowledge base and ability of Lindenwood University’s athletic training staff and faculty to serve its constituency
  • Attends professional development seminars, workshops, and related activities, reading the literature published in professional journals and texts, and sharing the information gathered from these professional activities with other staff professionals, athletes, and physicians

Support the Mission of the University

  • Participates as a fully productive member of the professional staff by adhering to all university policies and procedures and the treatment protocols and procedures established by the Lindenwood University athletic training department
  • Works cooperatively with other health care providers including family physicians and medical specialists

Required Qualifications – Required qualifications to effectively perform the job. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered. (Additional requirements may be designated by position.)

  • Master's degree required
  • Certification by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (BOC) required
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure as an Athletic Trainer in the state of employment required
  • Five years or more of college experience either as a graduate assistant or as an assistant athletic trainer at another college or university preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures
  • Must be able to understand and use a variety of modalities to provide athletic training services for Lindenwood University athletes
  • Familiar with governing rules
  • General computer skills

Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.

  • Position involves working with athletes
  • Evening and weekend work is required
  • Position requires traveling for practice and game coverage
