The Department of Philosophy and Religion in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in religious studies at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 1, 2020. Applicants should have a Ph.D. or an anticipated Ph.D. completion by August 2020.

 

Candidates should be effective teachers and must be strongly committed to excellence in scholarly research. We welcome applications from candidates engaged in high-quality teaching and scholarship in Islam. The department particularly welcomes candidates with a broad training in religious studies who, in addition to teaching advanced undergraduate courses in Islam, would be prepared to teach in areas including religious ethics, philosophy of religion, and theory and methods of the study of religion. We especially welcome candidates who would contribute to the University’s first-year seminar program in Complex Problems or seek engagement in the College’s Critical Race, Gender, and Culture Collaborative. In addition to scholarship and teaching, responsibilities will include participation in department, school and university activities.
