Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Two years of relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness working in an academic setting with college students of diverse ages and cultures in a variety of settings.
  • Ability to understand the components and sequence of courses for academic degree programs.
  • Ability to keep current on relevant academic programs and related institutional information.
  • Strong analytic and organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally in the exchange of information with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office programs and G-Suite Google Tools.

N/A Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The purpose of this position is to support the mission of the RCOE through systematically staying abreast of necessary university, college, program and departmental needs and requirements related to educator preparation curriculum and areas of student development and success.

The James Center for Student Success and Advising is the administrative unit in the RCOE where students are introduced to academic and co-curricular opportunities. The advising team, located within the center, advises and collaborates with students as they navigate their academic programs, curriculum, and the ongoing development of their educational plans. The James Center for Student Success and Advising is committed to inclusive excellence and recognizes that inclusion and excellence are one and the same in the service of students. Duties and responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to the following:
  • Conduct scheduled and walk-in advising meetings for assigned caseload with main campus and Distance Ed. College of Education undergraduate declared and admitted RCOE students enrolled in elementary education, special education, and child development academic programs.
  • Create a welcoming, sensitive, purposeful, and professional environment that is inclusive of students from a range of diverse backgrounds.
  • Provide students with information and preparation regarding teacher licensure testing requirements, admission to teacher education, academic program requirements, degree audits, and policies and procedures relevant to success in the college of education classroom and fieldwork experiences.
  • Assess student academic needs, career interests, and personal needs and develop academic/degree program completion plans that support student understanding of the structure and requirements of their academic programs.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of student contact in accordance with FERPA and institutional guidelines and regulations.
  • Facilitate annual main campus and Appstate online student orientation presentations for new first-year, transfer, and early college prospective education students; participation in other orientation programming as appropriate for communicating academic program expectations.
  • Collaborate with the college of education staff and faculty across departments and academic programs on the main and Appstate online campuses.
  • Maintain proficiency in BANNER, DegreeWorks, ASULearn, and other university data management systems.
  • Provide students with timely referrals to faculty, department chairs, and university services as appropriate.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of undergraduate programs, university requirements, student development theory, advising best practices, and social justice principles.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Suggested Salary Range $42,000 - $48,000 Physical Demands of Position
