Reporting Relationships 

Reports to: Direction is received from the Dean of Math and Sciences.

Supervision Exercised: Functional supervision may be exercised over student workers.
 
Job Summary Teach assigned classes, teach laboratory sections, and perform related activities to classroom instruction. This position is expected to primarily teach Introductory Human Biology (BIO-100), Introductory Life Science (BIO-103), and Introductory Life Science Laboratory (BIO-104). 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Additional related duties may be assigned.
  1. Plan course content and assign appropriate course work.
  2. Select appropriate texts and teaching materials.
  3. Revise course outlines, objectives, and catalog information as needed.
  4. Meet classes at assigned times.
  5. Instruct students in the proper use of lab equipment where appropriate.
  6. See that equipment and/or labs are properly maintained where appropriate.
  7. Maintain supply and equipment inventory where appropriate.
  8. Participate in assessment of student learning.
  9. Maintain student records, evaluate student progress, and assign grades.
  10. Maintain office hours convenient for students.
  11. Prepare course/class reports as required.
  12. Actively participate in course and program assessment in the biological sciences.
  13. Submit budget requests and written narrative when appropriate.
  14. Attend required meetings (faculty, division, in-service training, etc.).
  15. Assist in short term and long term course planning.
  16. Participate in division, college, advisory committees, and community activities.
  17. Keep informed on the latest research and journal articles.
  18. Attend and participate in conferences related to teaching area and membership in appropriate professional organizations is recommended.
  19. Assist in evaluating other divisional faculty members.
  20. Assist in student program advisement.
  21. Recruit students when appropriate.
  22. Assist in placement of graduates when appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Master’s Degree in Biology or Master’s Degree in a closely related field with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in biology is required.
  2. Education beyond the master’s level is desirable; Ph.D. preferred.
  3. Graduate coursework or previous experience in Anatomy and/or Physiology preferred.
  4. Prior teaching experience in college level courses preferred.
  5. Commitment to the community college mission.
  6. Desire to be involved in division and college initiatives.
