English Language Coordinator
Founded in 1943 and a Johns Hopkins division since 1950, The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies of Johns Hopkins (SAIS) has been educating global leaders for more than 70 years. As a highly selective graduate institution with a distinguished faculty, SAIS consistently ranks as one of the top schools of international relations in the world. SAIS was founded to provide a practical approach to training students in international leadership and foreign relations, and to provide mid-career educational opportunities for those already working in related fields. Today, SAIS offers the MA, MIPP, MAIA, MAIS, MIEF, GPP, and Ph.D. degrees and enrolls 640 full-time students in Washington, D.C., primarily in the school’s two-year Master of Arts program. Nearly 40 percent of the students are non-citizens coming from more than 70 countries. About 200 students attend SAIS Europe in Bologna, Italy, while about 180 students attend the Hopkins-Nanjing Center in Nanjing, China.
Language Studies Program
The Language Studies Program (LSP) contributes to the school mission of enabling its students to better understand the world and improve it through the instruction of language and culture in the context of international relations. It offers instruction in 17 languages including English. As part of the school graduation requirements, MA students need to pass a language proficiency exam in one of the languages taught at SAIS. The LSP is responsible for the language proficiency assessment of these students. To fulfill its mission, the LSP works in conjunction with the Office of Academic Affairs, Admissions and Student Affairs.
The English Language Program (ELP), a division of the LSP, focuses on providing language instruction at the advanced level for our non-native graduate student population. It has an average student enrollment of 114 students per semester. Courses offered range from Advanced-Mid through Superior levels. In addition, the ELP administers placement tests for the admitted and entering students and language proficiency exams for the graduating students. The minimum language proficiency required for graduation is performance at the Advanced-High sub-level for Speaking and at the Superior level for Reading, Writing and Listening (ACTFL scale).
The English Language Coordinator is directly responsible for the academic and administrative organization of the English language program and developing and overseeing the English language curriculum and instruction. . The coordinator may also provide academic support for the Summer and Pre-Term programs and the Writing Center.
- Run the day to day operations of the ELP
- Serve as point of contact for all incoming, first year, and graduating students
- Provide language academic advising to students
- Maintain a student database that includes the students’ proficiency records
- Oversee English language testing for newly admitted students to determine conditional admission to the school
Language Faculty Supervision:
- Supervise the English language faculty
- Recruit and recommend hiring, renewals and cancellations of English part-time and adjunct faculty
- Deliver training workshops to the English language faculty, as needed
Curriculum and Assessment:
- Develop the curriculum and instructional materials of the ELP in topics relevant to the study of International Relations
- Prepare, design and administer the placement proficiency exams
- Hire certified language examiners.
- Teach advanced level courses of English, with a specific emphasis on the development of written and oral skills for academic purposes through content-based instruction in topics of International Relations.
Writing Center Management
In conjunction with the Office of Academic Affairs, oversee the operation and services of the SAIS Writing Center.:
- Hire, train, and supervise writing tutors
- Develop writing resources and offer workshops for targeted student populations
- Work with faculty to address student writing needs
- Hold individual consultations with students in need of writing assistance, as time permits
- Master’s degree required; doctoral degree preferred
- Five years of related experience
- Experience managing an English language program at the college graduate level
- Experience delivering blended and online language instruction
- Excellent oral communication skills in order to interact with students, faculty and all levels of administration from diverse cultures
- Ability to manage multiple tasks
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, course management tools (Blackboard), and multimedia authoring tools
- Previous experience managing an English Writing Center preferred

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.
The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
