Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ) (http://www.qatar.tamu.edu/), a branch campus of Texas A&M University (TAMU), invites applications for the position of Program Chair in the Mechanical Engineering Program. It is anticipated that the position will be filled by the beginning of the Fall 2019 semester or as soon thereafter as possible. This position is a four-year renewable appointment at TAMUQ, which is located in Doha, Qatar. The successful candidate must therefore relocate to Qatar.

 

TAMUQ offers undergraduate degree programs in Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, and Petroleum Engineering. These programs attract some of the best high school graduates in the region, resulting in an annual freshman enrollment of approximately 130-140 and a total college enrollment of about 550 undergraduate students. All of the TAMUQ engineering programs are ABET accredited.

 

The Mechanical Engineering Program (https://www.qatar.tamu.edu/programs/mechanical-engineering/) has 12 faculty members, who have a strong commitment to teaching, research, and service. The Mechanical Engineering faculty members are actively engaged in externally funded research. The program benefits from state-of-the-art facilities and instrumentation in support of it's key educational and research missions. 

 

The mission of the Mechanical Engineering Program at TAMUQ is to: 1) provide quality education, well grounded in the fundamental principles of engineering, to prepare students for leadership positions and successful careers in industry, government and academia, 2) extend the knowledge base of mechanical engineering to support the competitiveness of existing industry and to spawn new economic development in the State of Qatar and the region through active involvement in basic and applied research, and 3) provide professional development opportunities for practicing engineers through continuing education, service, and outreach activities. The Chair’s role includes providing overall leadership and direction to the program, managing the use of resources within the program, and ensuring that the TAMUQ course offerings are materially identical with respect to curriculum and quality compared to the corresponding disciplines at TAMU.  The Chair is expected to promote the development of the Program and work with faculty across the campus, local industry, and the regional community, and to identify and pursue innovations in education, research, and service.  The Chair is also expected to teach courses with an average teaching load of one course (typically 3 credit-hour course) per semester.

 

Doha is the home of Education City, a dedicated campus devoted to research and education. In addition to TAMUQ, the Education City Campus hosts other academic institutions including Weill Cornell Medical College, Carnegie-Mellon University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Northwestern University, and Georgetown University. As a branch campus of an international.

Qualifications: Applicants must hold a Ph.D.  in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field, with distinguished teaching and research records. The applicants must possess excellent communication skills with a proven record of effective leadership in identifying, prioritizing and addressing organizational challenges in an academic or related setting; as well as experience working with industry to forge strong partnerships. Additional essential qualifications will include successful administrative experience, ability to effectively engage a broad range of stakeholders, a strong commitment to diversity, equality and inclusion, and familiarity with ABET accreditation process. A successful candidate should show a strong commitment to advocate and lead the program in developing and implementing a compelling vision for education, research, and service.
