Instruct Spanish-only or Spanish-preferred students in Adult Basic Education and GED classes. The Adult Basic Education instructor provides an instructional program to meet the needs of Spanish-only speaking students, in compliance with the Adult Education Act. The instructor is responsible to the Dean of Academic Foundations or designees in carrying out his/her assigned instructional tasks. The instructor shall perform such other duties as assigned by his/her immediate supervisor.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in education or related field, or equivalent combination of experience and education/training related to teaching and/or working with the Spanish GED population. Must be fluent in English and Spanish languages. One year, full or part time experience in instructional setting teaching adults. Documented ability to plan and implement instructional programs appropriate for adult learners. Proficient use of computers. Must be able to work respectfully with individuals of all cultures, backgrounds, perspectives, and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Master’s degree with a major in Adult Education, Reading, English, Math or related field. Knowledge of strategies and techniques to instruct students with disabilities. Experience teaching adults in ABE / GED programs or non-traditional alternative programs. Experience teaching basic computer skills.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Work is performed in an office or classroom setting with minimal exposure to safety or health hazards. May require arm, hand, and finger dexterity to operate keyboard or other office equipment. Requires sufficient visual acuity to recognize alphanumeric characters. Requires good hearing and well-developed speaking ability to communicate with staff and students. Work is performed indoors with minimal exposure to safety and health hazards. Considerable time is spent doing work on a computer.

Essential Duties:

Instruct assigned basic skills, GED preparation, and orientation classes.

Monitor and evaluates learning progress; determine learning needs of students.

Provide classroom environment conducive to student learning.

Teach classes as assigned following approved course outline; prepare and develop materials for assigned classes; provide students with course syllabi.

Maintain accurate records of attendance, student competencies, and progress.

Participate in curriculum development; recommend textbooks and other instructional materials and equipment; recommend course outline revisions.

Maintain college facilities and equipment.

Keep abreast of technological changes and development in subject area, innovative teaching techniques, and continuously strive for professional improvement.

Attend staff meetings; work in cooperative manner with others in department and college; represent department at pertinent meetings as required.

Promote positive image of college and college programs.

Participate in department processes designed to recruit and retain students. Assist with registration.
