The English Department at the University of Maine invites applications for an academic-year, tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor in the area of Creative Writing—Fiction, anticipated to start September 1, 2019. We seek a fiction writer with the ability to teach creative-writing workshops and literature courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level. We are especially interested in candidates with knowledge of and ability to teach Canadian literature. Our department has a commitment, both in its curriculum and its long-standing reading series, to innovative prose and diverse voices. Writers who bring new perspectives and/or work in experimental forms, such as speculative fiction, fabulist fiction, hybrid work, or autofiction, are encouraged to apply. The ordinary teaching assignment is 3/2.

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Maintaining a substantial record of publication in the genre of fiction and participating actively in the creative writing field. Teaching responsibilities will include creative writing workshops (fiction; multigenre) at all levels and Canadian literature courses. Other teaching responsibilities may include an introductory course on narratology, and literature and special topics courses. Student advising and service to the Creative Writing program, department, university, and community are also expected. In addition, the position may share responsibility for programming the New Writing Series, advising the undergraduate literary journal, administering creative writing prizes, participating in the undergraduate capstone program and serving on Honors student and graduate (MA) thesis committees.
