Provides assistance in caring for plants and maintaining the greenhouse building and its systems. Assists with maintenance of landscape plants in garden beds around the greenhouse. Assists with all operations with regard to the organic farm. All operations are organic and do not require spraying herbicides or pesticides.

Required Qualifications:

Education and Experience: Position requires education or experience that provides basic knowledge as listed above. Must be able to pass tractor safety test administered by department.

Knowledge and Skills: Requires basic knowledge of plant identification, greenhouse plant maintenance, and landscape plant maintenance. Requires reading and writing at a level sufficient to fulfill the duties for the position. Must be able to manipulate irrigation system set ups and irrigation automatic timing systems.

Abilities: Requires the ability to learn, understand and follow procedures, rules and protocol. Requires the ability to work with minimal supervision with attention to detail and cleanliness.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prefer six months related experience.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Physical Skills and Abilities: Requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard hand tools and equipment of horticulture, and operate electric valves and irrigation controllers. Must have ability to read word and numbers, and operate equipment safely. Requires ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time. Position requires regular use of tractor. Must be able to lift 50 pounds on a regular basis.

Working Conditions: Work is performed inside both climate controlled and unheated greenhouses. Requires extensive outdoor landscaping work (all seasons). Some exposure to organic soil amendments used in fertilizers.

Essential Duties:

Monitors health and well-being of greenhouse plant materials collection.

Assists in providing routine maintenance of the greenhouse building, such as cleaning and refilling soil containers. Assists in monitoring and maintaining greenhouse systems, such as sprinkling, cooling, and irrigation systems. Responsible for independently performing these duties during summer months.

Assists with general landscape work to maintain grounds around the greenhouse.

Provides guidance to the summer CWE students working in the organic garden and helps with farm tasks, including planting, fertilizing, weeding, irrigating, and harvesting.

Works with the grounds maintenance department on availability of tools and equipment as well as management of the grass area around the garden. Drive tractor on a regular basis.

Assists with fall, winter and spring harvesting for culinary department. Collects kitchen waste from culinary weekly and coffee grounds daily from campus coffee shops for compost piles.

Assists with regular maintenance of fruit and nut trees on the farm.

Makes compost on a regular basis.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
