NMHU is seeking a candidate for Retained Term Faculty position to be located as a .5 FTE position as a Spanish Professor at the Assistant or Associate level in the Department of Languages and Culture Studies. In addition the position will be matched with a .5 FTE allocation as a Professor of Bilingual Education in the Department of Teacher Education (School of Education); this will also determine the Assistant or Associate level.

Duties and Responsibilities

NMHU is seeking an innovative and engaging candidate whose teaching, scholarship and service will contribute to both academic programs and the respective schools.The overall instructional load will be 24 credit hours per academic year, allocated as 12 credit hour instruction in the Department of Languages and Culture and 12 credit hour instruction in the School of Education minor program in Bilingual Education. In the Department of Languages and Culture the successful candidate will potentially provide instruction in all levels of Spanish language including Heritage Language instruction and Spanish for the professions. They may also provide instruction in Latin American, Mexican and Chicano literature, film and cultural studies. In the Bilingual Education program the faculty member may instruct in General Education and Bilingual Education program the the faculty member may instruct in General Education and Bilingual course directly aligned with the Bilingual Education minor including ESL and TESOL courses. The successful candidate will assist students in the development of state teacher competencies necessary for New Mexico Bilingual Education Endorsement Requirements. In addition to teaching 24 semester hours per year, the successful candidate will serve on departmental and school committees, and assist with advising/mentoring undergraduate/graduate students while working with current faculty to build department level strategic plans, and be supportive of the diverse populations served by NMHU . The successful candidate will also have or show potential for an active research agenda in either or both disciplines.

Minimum Qualifications

- An earned Doctoral Degree in the area of Bilingual Education or Spanish with Bilingual Certification.
- The candidate wil have two or more years of experience teaching P-12 schools and two or more years of teaching at the college/university level.
- Successful candidates will be capable of teaching and communication with colleagues and students via electronic and digital modalities.
- Successful experience teaching online (e.g. online synchronous , online asynchronous, blended/hybrid).
- Native or near native fluency in Spanish as well as English.
- Knowledge of Bilingual Education in P-12 setting and the various bilingual education programs in New Mexico.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience in various teaching modalities including face-to-face, online asynchronous, online synchronous, and blended/hybrid.
- This position requires experience with collaboration and co-teaching, as well as teaching diverse learners, and functioning as a university supervisor for student teachers.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member.

Preferred Qualifications

- Five years of university-level teaching experiencing.
- Familiarity with Heritage Language instruction, Language Revitalization and Cultural Studies.
- Demonstrated successful experience with online course development and knowledge of Quality Matters standards for quality online courses.
- Experience with community outreach/engagement, and developing and partnerships high desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of Bilingual Education P-12 settings and the various bilingual education programs in New Mexico.
