The Department of Writing in the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Pratt Institute invites applications for the full-time tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in creative writing to begin Fall 2019. The newly-created Department of Writing, located on Pratt's historic 25-acre campus in the vibrant neighborhood of Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, offers an MFA, BFA, and minor in creative writing.
Candidates who work in nonfiction, in more than one genre, and/or in hybrid forms are especially encouraged to apply. Demonstrable connections to other arts (visual, digital) and/or to research practices are also of interest. The selected candidate will teach both in a BFA program in which an expansive range of genres are represented, and in an MFA program that emphasizes collaboration, exploratory approaches to making, and engagement with communities.
The successful candidate will teach courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level, supervise graduate thesis projects, and participate actively in the life and work of the department. We seek candidates with the proven ability to teach and mentor students from diverse backgrounds. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teach courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level, in accordance with the load dictated by the collective bargaining agreement, with release time available for active practitioners and for the first two years on the tenure track.
- Supervise graduate thesis projects
- Develop new courses and revise existing courses in area of specialization
- Develop and sustain an active record of creative activity and publication
- Participate in conferences, performances, exhibitions, and readings as pertinent to area of specialization
- Serve on department, school and Institute committees, participate in department activities, and provide service to the profession.
- Contribute to the life of the department.
QUALIFICATIONS:
MFA or PhD in creative writing or a relevant field, or equivalent
experience. Applicants must have a substantial record of
publication including at least one book, and a strong record of
effective teaching.
SALARY is commensurate with qualifications and
experience.
