Job Description Summary

Provide vision, leadership, support, and coordination for the transportation research, education, and outreach programs that are aligned with the Auburn University Transportation Research Institute, which is part of the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering.

Serve as a national spokesperson and advocate for the Institute and the various transportation programs with state and federal agencies and legislative bodies; transportation industry; and numerous collaborators in academia, national laboratories, and non-profit sectors.

Assist the Dean and Associate Dean for Research of the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering in the development of vision and strategic plans for the Institute and the College’s transportation programs.

Identify funding opportunities, assemble and coordinate team efforts to successfully secure funding for transportation related programs.

Coordinate teams of faculty from various academic departments, research centers and institutes within the University to develop a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to solve transportation related programs in Alabama and the nation.

Provide strategies and practices to expand and sustain transportation research, education, and outreach, including assisting in recruiting, retaining and training qualified faculty and students.

Cultivate diversity in the Institute and across the various transportation research centers by encouraging an inclusive culture that will serve as model for all university constituencies.

Minimum Qualifications

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited program at the time employment begins.; a doctoral degree in a transportation engineering related field is desired.

Status as a Registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) is desired.

15 to 20 years of experience including 10 years in transportation engineering or closely related field with a demonstrated record of accomplishment and significant achievement and leadership in transportation engineering.

An acute understanding of extramural funding and a demonstrated ability to secure such funding from both federal and state agencies, industry, national laboratories and other interested non-profit organizations.

A solid track record of participation in administrative roles within an academic, corporate and/or a government environment with experience in some management of research and fiscal administration.

Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills and ability to work across multiple constituencies within a culture of “shared governance” to assure success of the overall transportation program.

A demonstrated ability to form and successfully lead multidisciplinary teams.

Experience in working with state & federal agencies and legislative bodies and acute understanding of how they operate.

The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time appointment is scheduled to begin, and must continue working legally for the proposed term of employment.
